Psalm 131 Meditation

By Monica Brislawn, former Director of Women's Ministries of Calvary Church of Santa Ana. "Nor do I involve myself in great matters, Or in things too difficult for me. Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me. O Israel, hope in the LORD, from this time forth and forever." Psalm 131:2-3

Recently my friend invited me to choose a Psalm and meditate on it all week with her. It would be a great way to talk about the things of God. I selected Psalm 131.

David says something very interesting in this passage. He says, "...nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me." This was surprising since he seemed to have done both of these things. He had killed a lion and a bear (1 Samuel 17:36), fought Goliath (1 Samuel 17:50), and won battles for his country (1 Samuel 18:5). He was even the king of Israel. David then says what he did instead; he says, "Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child rests against his mother, my soul is like a weaned child within me." God had elevated him to a place of influence and involved him in difficult matters, but David's ambition was to be childlike. David's preoccupation was not the next "great thing" but in the Lord Himself as he says in the final verse, "O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever."

Dear friend, what absorbs your energy today? What are you constantly thinking about? Are you dreaming and devising how you will attain to that special place of influence or accomplish that next "great thing"? This is the principle: Let God be your initiator in the plans He has for you and you just seek to be like a little child, resting in His bosom. Seek the knowledge of God - may God Himself be your only ambition.

Today, rest in the bosom of your heavenly Father. That's right, lay your head down and rest. Let Him take care of the plans He has for you. If He wants to elevate you, He will. Be absorbed with Him.
